Backyard Swing with Mom
For busy families, planning family photos can sometimes feel like one more thing to add to an already full calendar. There are outfits to coordinate, children to get ready, schedules to work around and, of course, the hope that everyone will still be smiling by the time the photo session actually begins.
But family photography doesn't have to feel complicated.
One of the things I love most about lifestyle family photography is that it gives families the freedom to relax, connect and simply enjoy being together. And sometimes, the perfect location for that is the place where everyone already feels most comfortable: home.
I pulled this sweet Los Angeles family session from the archives because it is such a lovely example of what an at-home lifestyle session can be: relaxed, playful, personal and filled with genuine family connection.
What Is Lifestyle Family Photography?
So, what exactly is a lifestyle family photo session?
Lifestyle photography falls somewhere between traditional portraiture and documentary family photography. Rather than formally posing everyone for every photograph, I provide gentle guidance and simple prompts that encourage natural interaction.
I might ask a family to walk together, snuggle a little closer, give someone a kiss, play with the kids or simply look at one another. That little bit of direction means you never have to wonder, "What are we supposed to do?" while still leaving plenty of room for authentic expressions and spontaneous moments to unfold.
This is especially helpful when photographing children. Instead of expecting little ones to sit perfectly still and smile on command, I give them opportunities to move, play and interact with the people they love.
My approach to lifestyle family photography is relaxed and gently guided. I look for beautiful light, help families settle naturally into the space and then photograph the real reactions and connections that follow.
The goal isn't perfection. It's creating photographs that feel like your family and preserving the personalities, relationships and little moments you will want to remember years from now.

Family Time in the Backyard
Why Choose an At-Home Family Photo Session?
Los Angeles has no shortage of beautiful locations for family photography, but sometimes one of the most meaningful locations is your own home.
An at-home family photo session can be especially wonderful for families with young children. There is no need to pack everyone up and drive to another location, children are surrounded by familiar things, favorite toys are nearby, and there is room to take a break if someone needs one.
Planning photos with little ones? These tips for a successful family photo session with kids can help make the experience even easier.
Your home also adds another layer to your family's story.
The backyard where your children play, the steps where everyone gathers, the favorite chair, the family dog underfoot or the little everyday spaces you barely think about now can become surprisingly meaningful parts of your photographs years later.
And your home doesn't have to look like something from the pages of a design magazine. I look for the areas that offer the best light and work well photographically, whether that's a living room, bedroom, front porch, backyard or simply one beautiful little pocket of light.

Wrapped Up in Family Love
A Relaxed Los Angeles Family Photo Session at Home
For this Los Angeles lifestyle family photography session, I met up with Ken, Megan, their sweet daughter Gracie and the family's adorable pup, Frankie, at their beautiful home in a charming Los Angeles neighborhood.
From the moment I arrived, Megan and Gracie gave me such a warm welcome, and Frankie was very happy to be part of the action too.
Rather than trying to turn their home into a formal portrait studio, we used their surroundings as part of the experience. We spent time outside, followed the beautiful natural light and gave Gracie plenty of opportunities to simply be herself.
That's one of my favorite things about photographing families at home. Children don't have to perform for the camera. They can move, play, cuddle Mom and Dad, love on the family dog and settle into the session at their own pace.
The result is a collection of photographs that feels much more like time spent together as a family than a traditional photo shoot.
Natural Family Photos That Capture Real Connection
What stood out most during my time with Megan, Ken, Gracie and Frankie was just how connected they were.
There were hugs and piggyback rides, quiet little looks, plenty of affection and some especially sweet moments between Gracie and Frankie. Instead of trying to manufacture those interactions, my job was simply to create the space for them to happen and be ready to photograph them when they did.
Those are often my favorite images from a family session.
Of course, I always want to create some beautiful photographs where everyone is together, but the smaller moments matter too. The way your child looks at you. The laughter that happens between photographs. The relationship between a little girl and her dog. The expressions you might not even notice in the moment.
Those photographs tell the fuller story of your family.
And years from now, they have a wonderful way of bringing you right back to what this particular chapter of life actually felt like.
I hope you enjoy a few of my favorite moments from this sweet Los Angeles family session. ...
